Investigating Bollywood

Moving away from romance, action and comedy, Bollywood fans will now get a taste of detective films starting with Samrat & Co tomorrow
Investigating Bollywood

Like many things in life, cinema too has been changing with times. From the action packed films of the 80s to the romance in the 90s to the latest Horrex (horror and sex) films, Indian cinema has come a long way.

Though we have seen several detective shows like CID on television, Bollywood has seldom touched upon the detective genre. Save for Abbas-Mustan, who have made films like Baadshah and 36 China Town which featured detective characters, the industry is yet to find its Sherlock Holmes.

However, this trend is about to change this year with a string of detective films scheduled for release.  City Express brings you the list.

Samrat & Co

This detective thriller film directed by Kaushik Ghatak tells the story of a young, beautiful and rich girl who approaches a private investigator with a strange case. Along with his assistant friend, the detective starts investigating mysterious facts and uncovers deadly truths, including a murder.

Produced by Kavita K Barjatya, Samrat & Co features Rajeev Khandelwal in the title role of Samrat, along with Madalasa Sharma and Gopal Dutt, who essay important roles. The film is slated to hit screens tomorrow.

Detective

Byomkesh Bakshi

Directed by Dibakar Banerjee, it is based on the detective character Byomkesh Bakshi created by writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. He is one of the most successful detective characters in Bengali literature and was written in the 1930s. The story of the film is set in the 1940s and will trace the evolution of a young Byomkesh Bakshi into a detective.

Produced by Yash Raj films and Dibakar Banerjee, the film features Sushant Singh Rajput, Anand Tiwari, Swastika Mukherjee and Divya Menon. It is slated to release in February, 2015.

Jagga Jasoos

In what is being touted as India’s version of ‘Sherlock Holmes-meets-James Bond-meets-Mission Impossible’, this Anurag Basu film has generated quite the hype. It is the filmmakers first tryst with the genre and the film is said to be a typical Bollywood entertainer with the right dose of action, comedy and mystery.

Jagga Jasoos features Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif and is slated to hit screens in May, 2015.

Bobby Jasoos

The name Vidya Balan, is enough to attract the audience to cinemas. From playing a glamourous diva in The Dirty Picture to a pregnant woman searching for her husband in Kahaani – the actress has done it all. This August, Vidya will be seen in a brand new avatar, as she dons the role of a detective in the upcoming film Bobby Jasoos. Vidya’s new look has already garnered attention from the fans. While filming for the movie, sitting disguised as a beggar outside a railway station in Hyderabad, Vidya looked so real that a woman reportedly gave her some money and yelled at her for begging to eke out a livelihood. Also Dia Mirza has donned the hat of a producer for the first time with Bobby Jasoos.

Directed by Samar Shaikh, the film is slated to release on August 1.
