Tracks that celebrate father-daughter bond

After his debut effort Katradhu Thamizh in which he proved his mettle as a good director and writer, director Ram is all set to launch his second film Thanga Meengal. The trailer of the film  has become a big hit after it went viral on social media sites like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. While the hype of the teaser has not yet evaporated, the recently released audio  of the film has also become the talk of the town. Not just the songs, even the crisp lines by Ram before every song have become a rage.

The songs from the film have been penned by popular lyricist Na Muthukumar, while the music has been composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The director recites haiku poems based on the father-daughter relationship before each song is played.

The first haiku: Magalgalai petra appaakkalukku mattum than theriyum mutham kaamathil serndhadhillai endru (Fathers who have daughters alone know that kiss is not mixed with lust). The poem is folwed by the song Aanadha Yaazhai Meettugiraai.

“This song definitely has a place in the list of lullabies sung by fathers for their children, in Tamil movies,” says a music reviewer.

The second haiku portrays  separation between a father and a girl. It says, ‘Appaakkalai piriyaa magalgal adhirshtasaaligal. Magalgai piriyaa appaakkal bhagyavaangal. Aanal appadi ellaam thandhuvida vaazhkkai ondrum thozhan illai’ (Daughters who are not separated from their fathers are lucky. Fathers who are not separated from their daughters are blessed. But life is not a friend to shower such fortunes). The song ‘Nathi Vellam Meley’ follows this haiku.

Ram utters the third haiku: Magalgal ketpavatrai mudinthavarai mudiyaathu endru sollividakkoodathu engira vaazhkkaiyaithaan appaakkal vaazha aasaippadukiraargal’ (Fathers like to live a life where they try not to refuse requests put forth by their daughters). The song Yaarukkum Thozhanillai composed in Sufi style, follows the haiku.

Appaakkalum magalgalum ‘poga maatten’ endru adam pidikkira ore idam pallikkoodam mattum thaan’(The only place where both the fathers and daughters are not interested in going to is school). This is the fourth haiku and followed by the song First last. “This particular song will be the next anthem for school going children” the music reviewer added. One of the film-goers says, “The underlying theme for the songs in this movie is actually motherhood, as the songs are penned by Na Muthukumar, who lost his mother at an early age and considers his father as Thaayumaanavan (literally, father who has been a mother to a motherless child).”
