Friendship Actually is...

Ahead of International Friendship Day on August 3, S Subhakeerthana catches up with Kollywood celebrities who reveal the names of their closest buddies in the industry

‘I COUNT ON MY WIFE’ Vijay Antony

I don’t suppose you have many close friends. Neither do I. I don’t understand when someone says he has a lot of friends. It’s a sure sign that they don’t really know anyone. I don’t have too many close friends, but I would say I can count on my wife Fathima, who has always been there with me for everything. She’s more than a wife. Besides, I share a good bond with Tony, GNR Kumaravelan, Jayam Raja, Jeeva Shankar and Dr Manoj Beno.

‘Friendship is like sound health’ Abhinay Vaddi

Vijay Vasanth, director Cheran and Aadhi are my close buddies. Friendship is everything and it’s like sound health. You’ll not realise its value until it’s lost. I took to acting only because of Vijay Vasanth. He was the one to tell me that I was wasting my potentials. Cheran is one of the wittiest directors I’ve ever seen. Aadhi and I have attended acting classes together. He’s always been encouraging ! In fact, celebrity badminton matches have created a special bond among all of us. Maybe, we three would do a movie in future, but let’s see (Smiles).

‘FRIEND IS ONE WHO GIVES FREEDOM TO BE WHO I AM’ Kreshna

Any friendship is built on two things -- mutual trust and respect. In that way, I can say it’s Nakul. He’s someone who gives me total freedom to be myself. Also, Senthil Veerasamy and Vijayalakshmi Agathiyan are good friends of mine. Viji is my well-wisher and neighbour. We can’t tell the precise moment when, where and how a friendship is formed. It just happens with a very few.

‘IT IS HARD TO EXPLAIN’ Nakul

Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. But I would say Kreshna has been my best buddy. We’ve shared a lot of things and at the same time, he gives me the space I want. Shanthnu and Hariraj are equally good friends of mine.

‘BUDDIES help get through life’ Shakthi Vasudevan

We need best friends to get us through life. Sibi and I are close, and I hope our friendship stays the same forever. When we are in town, we meet at least meet thrice a week. Vikram Prabhu and Aadhi are also my good friends. We are from 2,000 millennium batch (pass out) at Don Bosco. And I can’t forget Shanthnu ! I’ve ragged him when he was my junior in college (Loyola). At that time, he was innocent. Now, when we talks to me, he sounds mature and professional as if he’s senior to me. (Laughs with a sigh)

‘ARYA IS MY BESTIE’ Srikanth

An old friend is the best mirror! Arya is my best friend. He’s been consistent. Sometime ago, when I approached him to do a cameo in my movie, he said ‘yes’ without a second thought. I would say I am glad to have met him. Though he’s one of the most busiest actors, he stays humble. Also, Shaam for that matter.

‘Sudeep, my best PAL’ Shaam

Sudeep (of Sandalwood) is my best friend and I can count on him in any regard. Whenever I feel low, I fly to Bengaluru and meet him. Trust me, he’s one of the nicest chaps I’ve ever seen. And, thanks to these Celebrity Cricket League matches, Arya, Vishal, Srikanth, and a few others have become close to me. Also, Abbas has been my well-wisher.

‘no best friends’ Atharvaa

Honestly speaking, I don’t have any close friend in the industry but I talk to everyone. And on this Friendship Day, I thank my female costars for putting up with me all these years (Smiles)

‘FATHER MEANS THE MOST TO ME’ Prashanth

My dad Thiagarajan is my best friend and there is nothing I would not do for him. With a lot of friends around, it’s tough to point at a guy and say he’s my best buddy. (Laughs) But when I honestly ask myself, which person means the most to me, it is my dad. He has stayed with me in moments of despair, confusion and grief. They say, a friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves you. Simran and I share a lovely bond. We’re still in touch. She’s an amazing human being.

‘SPECIAL BOND WITH MANCHU’ Aadhi

It’s hard to pick one best buddy because it would be unfair if I leave out the rest. But, if I have to tell one name, it would be Manchu Manoj Kumar of Tollywood. I share a special bond with him.

‘CLOSEST BOND WITH APPA’ Sibiraj

First comes appa (Sathyaraj). We share a close bond. Next, Shakthi Vasudevan, director Shakti S Rajan, Prasanna and Karthi. I call Karthi ‘anna’. In fact, once we were partners in crime (Laughs). Whenever, I want to discuss anything regarding cinema and production work, I would approach them.

‘TRUST, KEY TO FRIENDSHIP’ Aari

Friendship is the most beautiful thing in the world, which is beyond comprehension. It comes with trust, responsibility and being non-judgmental. It is more fun to talk to someone who’s easygoing and does not complicate things. Shanthnu, Shabbir and Prithvi Pandiarajan are my good friends and I hope we three will do a movie soon.

‘BLESSED TO HAVE GOOD CHAPS AROUND’ Arya

I am blessed to have a lot of good chaps around me — be it professional or personal! Vishal and I are very close and I know him for 20 years. We’ve played cricket on streets together. Eventhough we’re busy in our own ways, we’re in touch. Also Jiiva, Karthi, Shaam, Srikanth and Tamannaah are my good friends. I am sorry if I’ve missed someone. You know, it’s hard to zero in on somebody when it comes to this.
