Following the example set by recent films  like Aarohanam and Malini 22 Palayamkottai, which had women directors, is Soanpapadi. The film is directed by debutant Shivani, who decided to pursue her passion for films, instead of a career in IT post an engineering degree in Instrumentation,  from Madurai Kamaraj University.

The film stars Shri of Onaiyum Aatakuttiyum fame and Niranjana, a former model with a couple of Malayalam films in her kitty. Shivani has not assisted any director prior to her debut, but her confidence levels are high. She says, “My maternal grandfather Jeevarathinam has produced films earlier. He was my guiding light and for two years I did my homework, learning the ropes of filmmaking under his guidance. I have clarity of vision and a passion for films. So I took the plunge.”

Shivani.jpgLooks like talent runs in the family, as Shivani has chosen one of the stories written by her mother as the subject of her movie. “We used a bound script and met a lot of film people to know more about film making, before starting shoot,” recalls the young director.

The film has been produced by her father under the Golden Movie Makers banner. It stars Manobala, Sonia and Karate Raja among 55 actors. Child actor Sahil, who hails from New Zealand, has been roped in for a key role. The story is a crime thriller set in the world of modern technology in Chennai.

“The lead pair work in the IT field and the theme of the film is a contemporary one,” says Shivani.

Dhanraj Manickam of Vennila Veedu fame has composed the music while ThanuBalaji, former assistant of Madhie, cranks the camera. The shooting has been completed and the young director is planning for a May release.
