Varalaxmi who has previously played an acclaimed role in the Malayalam film Kasaba, is now returning to the industry for Arun Kumar Aravind’s Kattu that stars Asif Ali and Murali Gopi. Arun says he cast Varalaxmi after watching her performance in Bala’s Tharai Thappattai. “Also, she will be playing a Tamil girl in the film, and it was important to us that the actress looks the part.” Varalaxmi, who is currently busy with her Tamil projects, is expected to join the sets by late April. “It’s a strong character, but no more details can be divulged now,” the director says.

Kattu, which also marks the return of Arun Kumar Aravind after a two-year hiatus, is a dark rustic tale, drawing heavily from the creative oeuvre of Padmarajan. Scripted by Ananata Padmanabhan, Kattu will be mainly shot in and around Palakkad. “Both the lead characters in the film are taken from Padmarajan’s literary canvas,” says Arun. Kattu will hit the floors by the second week of April, and is set for release in August.
