Actor Priyadarshi speaks about situational comedy and speaking in Telangana dialect in Pelli Choopulu
Bringing subtle humour to the fore

There is an air of positivity surrounding debutante director Tharun Bhascker’s upcoming film Pelli Choopulu. The romantic comedy features a group of young, talented actors and the promos have already shown tremendous promise, as movie watchers eagerly await the film’s release this Friday.

Actor Priyadarshi, who plays one of the film’s key characters, says the cast shot for 32 days, having started in October 2015. “I had previously done a short film called Junoon with Tharun, so we have been close friends since then. After Junoon, I got a couple of film offers and I had done eight films, before starting Pelli Choopulu,” shares Priyadarshi.

The actor plays a hilarious role in the film as lead actor Vijay’s close friend. When asked about his comic timing, Priyadarshi says,  “One thing that was very clear in our minds was that you don’t have to be comical to bring out the comedy in a situation. Which is why, the humour has a subtle undertone to it. The situation was comical and we had to act according to it. The way Tharun treated the comedy in this film is phenomenal. I had clear direction and he told me ‘Boss, you are playing a guy who’s not funny, but someone who instead of solving problems for his friend, creates problems for him instead.”

“As an actor, it was very important for me to understand what goes into comedy. We don’t exactly know what will trigger laughter among the people. But Tharun was extremely confident about what we’ll shoot and I hope it pays off,” he adds, optimistically.

Priyadarshi speaks in typical Telangana dialect in the film, and he says that it required training for him to be able to master it.

“The characters are basically born and brought up in Telangana, so the script required for me to speak in Telangana dialect. At home, I speak neutral Telugu so I’m not used to speaking in this way. But it’s my job as an actor to learn different lingos,” adds the 27-year-old.

Pelli Choopulu features Vijay Devarakonda and Ritu Varma in lead roles.
