GUWAHATI: The resounding victory of the Congress in Mizoram Assembly elections may have surprised many, but certainly not Lal Thanhawla - believed to be the man instrumental in bringing the Congress back to power in this hill state after a gap of 10 years.
Attributing the landslide victory to the blessings of God, the Congress veteran and four-time former Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla told to this website’s newspaper that he was not surprised at all with the poll outcome.
“I am not surprised. The people are happy that they have been able to kick out the corrupt MNF (Mizo National Front) Government,” he said.
After a brief stint in armed movement under former Chief Minister and his mentor Laldenga and being imprisoned in an Army camp, Lal Thanhawla got actively involved in politics in mid-sixties when was elected as the president of Youth Congress. In 1972, when Mizoram became a Union Territory after being sliced out of Assam, he contested the polls and lost. But he emerged triumphant in all the six Assembly elections thereafter. Lal Thanhawla held the post of Chief Minister four times and once relinquished it to make way for Laldenga’s return to mainstream.
A jubilant Lal Thanwala, who is also the president of Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee, told to this website’s newspaper that his party would work tirelessly for the overall development of the state.
He alleged the MNF government, under rebel-turned-Chief Minister Zoramthanga, lost the polls as it could not live up to people’s expectations. “The MNF government did nothing for the people though sufficient funds were allocated to it by the UPA Government at the Centre under various development programmes,” Lal Thanwala alleged.
"I must also give credit to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi for visiting the state and campaigning for party candidates,” Lal Thanhawla said. He told to this website's newspaper that the immediate priority of his government would be to revamp the economic conditions of the people.
