NEW DELHI: A documentary on beef to be screened at a film festival in Delhi was denied permission for screening by the government.
Caste on the Menu Card was the only film out of 35 to be denied permission to be screened at the 12th Jeevika Asia Livelihood Documentary Festival organised by the Centre for Civil Society. The film, made by students of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences focuses on beef-eating practices in Mumbai.
An I&B official said, “The information provided about the film was inadequate.” Sources said there was apprehension that the subject of the film could create controversy so the ministry wanted more time to process the request. However, organisers differed. “We submitted all the films to the ministry on August 4 and got to know this film will not be screened only yesterday. We made a follow-up request but I don’t think they will allow it,” festival director Manoj Mathew said.
