Energy Minister D K Shivakumar was questioned for close to five hours at Eagleton Resort even as raids continued at his residence in Sadashivanagar and offices elsewhere; I-T department maintains that the search is the continuation of an investigation which has been in progress for a long time

BENGALURU: As Energy Minister D K Shivakumar stepped out of the car in front of his house at Sadashivanagar, after being escorted from Eagleton Resort, for questioning, he appeared clearly shaken. After greeting the crowd, he quickly went inside his residence even as his supporters continued to raise the decibel levels outside his residence.

Trouble for Shivakumar and his relatives started early on Wednesday morning. The minister, who was at the resort following his return from Delhi, was with his brother D K Suresh and MLC S Ravi when I-T officials, with the help of Central Reserve Police Force, came calling. Apart from Shivakumar’s residence, his offices and companies in which he has stakes were also targeted.
The minister was questioned for close to five hours at Eagleton Resort even as raids continued at his residence in Sadashivanagar. Around 10.40 am, he was escorted out of the resort by I-T sleuths and brought to his residence for further questioning.

Protest near house

Even before Shivakumar arrived, a large number of Congress workers and his supporters had gathered in front of the house. Though I-T officials had entered the house at 6 am, like other places that were being raided, local police learnt about it only around 9 am. The I-T officials had taken about 12 CRPF personnel along with them for security.
As the news of Shivakumar being brought to his residence spread, more Congress activists arrived, giving a hard time to police. The presence of a large number of his supporters initially prevented I-T officials from taking him into his residence. However, after a few minutes, the I-T sleuths, with police help, managed to take him inside.

Even though Shivakumar waved and greeted the crowd, the discomfort of an I-T raid was clearly visible on his face. His supporters raised slogans in his favour and berated the Centre for misusing the central agencies to armtwist the Congress-led state government.
The minister, who looked clearly troubled over the day’s developments, then appeared on the balcony of his house and assured his supporters that everything was fine.

The I-T officials continued questioning him at his residence and were even spotted carrying a note-counting machine to his residence around 8 pm. His brother D K Suresh and MLC S Ravi remained at the resort.

Meanwhile, the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation), Bengaluru said the search is “the continuation of an investigation which has been in progress for a considerable period of time.” “The minister was staying at a resort where some MLAs from another state are put up. Hence his room alone is being searched.”
