Malayalam compulsory from next month

The state government has made official language compulsory in all government establishments including the Secretariat from May 1.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government has made official language compulsory in all government establishments including the Secretariat from May 1. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday made the declaration whereby Malayalam will be mandatory in government, semi-government, public sector, autonomous and cooperative establishments. 


 All orders, circulars and letters issued from these establishments - subject to certain conditions - should be in Malayalam from May 1. The decision was taken at a high- level meeting on the official language held at the CM’s chamber on Monday.  


Cultural Affairs Minister A K Balan, official language high-power committee members poet Sugathakumari, Chief Secretary Nalini Netto, CM’s press advisor Prabha Varma, V N Murali, George Onakkoor and Administrative Reforms Department secretary K R Jyothilal attended.  


‘Bharanamalayalam’ launched
In an effort to promote the official language for administrative purposes, the Official Language Department has brought out Bharanamalayalam, an online lexicon and mobile application.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the mobile app and dictionary. glossary.kerala.gov.in is the first online dictionary on official languages in the state.

As many as 20,000 words, usages and Malayalam variations have been included. In addition, there are sections on department-wise words and usages, administrative language models and typing tools. The app can be downloaded from Google playstore.
