THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For relatives and acquaintances, he was a lovable, low-profile guy who preferred to be at home in the company of gadgets.
A medical school dropout, 30-year-old Cadell Jeansen Raja was passionate about becoming a ‘technopreneur’ and managed to own a technology start-up to develop hi-end games with an Australian entity.
With the police arresting Cadell from Chennai on Monday for allegedly murdering his parents, sister and a relative, people close to him are puzzled how the ambitious boy could commit the crime. They say he had plans to return to Australia to be more involved in developing games.
His parents Rajathankam and Dr Jean Padma, sister Caroline and relative Lalitha were laid to rest at the MateerMemorial CSI Church at LMS Junction on Monday noon.
Father Velvet John, who conducted the funeral, told Express Cadell’s parents attended church regularly and Lalitha was involved with ‘Pakalveedu’, a spiritual gathering of senior citizens hosted by the CSI community.
“They were God-fearing people,” said the priest. “Jean had plans to shift to Brunei with her daughter where she could practice medicine. Rajathankam wanted to concentrate on agriculture as he had plantations near Marthandam in Kanyakumari district, TN. We only knew Cadell was studying in Australia.”
Some say frustration could be the motive. His parents were pained when he failed to complete his medical studies in the Philippines and the Artificial Intelligence course in Australia, said Sam, a relative.
“He might have been frustrated about this for quite some time,” he said.
Gopalakrishnan, who runs Western Bakery Stores at Nanthencode, knew the family well. He said he saw Cadell and his mother last week when they came to buy a cake and a loaf of bread. “They seemed happy and there was nothing suspicious in their conversation,” he said. “When I asked Cadell why he wasn’t seen outside, he said he had arrived from Australia just a week ago.”
