THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the state government may face a a human rights issue if K M Shajahan, who was arrested for supporting Jishnu Pranoy’s family, was not released. “It is clear Shajahan is not a  party to the alleged conspiracy that led to the police action against the family members of Jishnu Pranoy in front of the Police Headquarters a few days ago,” he said.

Chandy, who visited Thankamma, mother of Shajahan, who launched an indefinite fast at her residence the other day demanding the release of  her son, told reporters those who assembled in front of the Police Headquarters, when Jishnu’s family was trying to meet the DGP, were only extending support to Mahija in her fight for justice.

“They didn’t go there to attack the DGP’s office. Shajahan was only a spectator,” he said.

“The government itself has withdrawn the conspiracy theory. Besides, why should there be a conspiracy ?

Jishnu’s family has made it clear that Shajahan was not known to them. How can a conspiracy be hatched with unknown persons? Shajahan never spoke to Jishnu’s family either. Can he conspire on his own?”, he asked.

The former chief minister’s comment came at a time when Shajahan’s detention was extended amidst charges that he was targeted by the government as he had been fighting the Lavalin case.
