KOLLAM: A protest programme organised by the Mahila Morcha against Kodikkunil Suresh MP, the other day, has boomeranged as the police have registered a case against the activists. The Mahila Morcha members who had sprinkled cow dung solution at the venue in which the MP carried out his 24-hour protest has been charged by the Kottarakkara police under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and subsequent sections of the Indian Penal Code.

“It seems the BJP is yet to come out from the clutches of caste. That’s why they conducted a purification ritual by sprinkling cow dung solution at the venue in which the MP had staged a protest. Also, it has to be considered that the BJP is turning its back against the people’s protest as the MP had staged a hunger strike demanding improvement of railway services,”  said a statement issued by the Congress Kottarakkara Block Committee.

According to the Kottarakkara police, a case under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (punishment for rioting), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence), 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and subsequent sections of Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.Kollam DCC president Bindu Krishna said the incident highlights the intolerance of BJP towards people’s protests. She demanded an apology from the BJP leadership. “It highlights the way the BJP treats Dalits and other backward sections. It’s a shame that they were talking about development and national integration. They have a feudal mentality,” said Bindu Krishna.

Meanwhile, BJP district president G Gopinath while condemning the filing of a case against Mahila Morcha activists said the Congress is raking up an unwanted controversy on the incident. “The MP’s protest was unwarranted. The activists had tried to protest against that. But they were falsely charged. The Congress is unnecessarily playing the caste card,” said Gopinath.
