KOCHI: The Njarakkal police on Monday registered cases against 250 people who staged a protest against the Indian Oil Corporation’s (IOC) LPG terminal at Puthuvype.
Around 300 protesters under the leadership of the Puthuvype LPG terminal Virudha Janakeeya Samara Samithi gathered near the LPG terminal around 9 am.
They blockaded the bridge linking Goshree Junction to Puthuvypu beach road. When the protesters refused to disperse by noon, the police forcibly removed them.
They were taken to the Njarakkal police station where two cases were registered under the various IPC Sections and the Kerala Public Ways (Restriction of Assemblies and Processions) Act, 2011.
The leaders of the protest, though, vowed to continue with the protests until the IOC scrapped the project. According to them, setting up an LPG bottling plant in a thickly populated area was a violation of the rules laid down by the MoEF and the interim order passed by the NGT.
