KOCHI: The Ernakulam Rural Police on Wednesday busted a racket which operated from Kasargod to smuggle ganja through the state’s airports. The racket was exposed when a police team nabbed two youngsters - Riyas, 25, and Manassir, 28 of Neeleeswaram in Kasargod - with about 10 gm of ganja. The officers said the two were on their way to the Nedumbassery airport.
They were nabbed after they tried to speed away from a vehicle check-up along NH-17. A police team chased the car and intercepted them at North Paravur town.It was revealed the duo were members of a gang trafficking ganja to Kuwait and the UAE and had travelled to foreign countries more than once with the contraband. Police are investigating whether the youngsters have any extremist link.
The accused roped in youths as carriers and sent them abroad with a direction to hand over ‘a file with some documents’ to people abroad. In many cases, even the carriers were not properly told of the contents inside the file,” said the officers. A probe has been launched to trace other members of the racket.
