While Bablu Mashis and Umesh died immediately after the accident, Soorya Kanth succumbed to his injuries at KIMS Hospital on Friday. According to an officer of L&T, which employed the workers, the truck hit the workers around 11.45 pm when they were returning to the work point after placing barricades on one side of the road.

“The vehicle hit the workers after ramming the barricades which were placed in a visible area. Unfortunately, the other workers present on the spot couldn’t note the vehicle number. Two workers died on the spot and the third one was declared dead at the hospital. Another worker suffered multiple injuries on his head and is undergoing treatment at KIMS Hospital,” said the officer.

The bodies have been handed over to the relatives after the post-mortem examination at the Kalamassery Medical College on Friday.  Executives of DMRC and L&T told Express they would bear the funeral expenses.

Vehicle number identified
The police have identified the registration number (GJ- 01 DZ - 0587) of the vehicle which mowed down Metro workers near the Muttom yard.
The vehicle was identified after examining the CCTV footages on the stretch.
“The investigation is going on in full swing and we have formed seven teams exclusively for the purpose. The vehicle involved is a goods carrier truck and an investigation has been launched to trace the vehicle. The culprit will be nabbed without much delay,” said A V George IPS, Ernakulam District Police Chief.
