Ask the Doctor

I am a 32-year-old woman, suffering from migraine for the last eight years.  The headaches, almost daily, occur on the top of the head and behind the eyes. They start with a dull pain and increase in intensity, accompanied by nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Initially, I used to get better with pain-killers, but now no medicine gives relief. Can acupuncture help me?

The type of migraine you are describing is caused by deficiency in the liver channel. Such type of headaches do not respond to any painkillers. Acupuncture can rectify the imbalances in the channels and treat your headache completely within 20 sittings, taken daily.  Specific fine needles are put in the scalp and foot to treat migraine. They are absolutely painless and do not cause any side effects

I am 35 years old and have been suffering from severe dizziness, slight deafness and ringing in the ears for the past one year.  My condition has been diagnosed as Miniere’s disease. I sometimes sweat at night and generally feel exhausted.  I also suffer from throbbing pain in the temples. Can acupuncture treat me?

Miniere’s disease normally falls into the category of Kidney Yin deficiency (Yin deficiency in the kidney meridian). Since you also complain of throbbing headaches, it shows that you also have an accompanied liver yang excess which is why your condition is worsening and making you feel exhausted.  Acupuncture rightly balances the kidney and liver channel energies. But it is a long process requiring a minimum of two months of treatment. Initially, to start with 20 sittings daily, gradually tapering to alternate days, twice a week and once a week schedule.

I am a 38-year-old woman suffering from breathlessness mostly after an emotional stress. During the attack, I feel very thirsty and experience a bitter taste in my mouth.  I also suffer from frequent throbbing aches on the temples.  I generally feel wounded-up and very frustrated. I also suffer from occasional palpitations. Doctors have put me on Alprox 0.5 mg at night and Asthalin inhaler thrice a day. Please help me.

Your emotional outbursts have caused a severe imbalance in the flow of energy in your liver channel, which in result has obstructed the energy (qi) in the lungs. Such condition makes it difficult for the patient to exhale normally. Acupuncture is extremely effective in controlling mental and emotional problems. By reducing the excess rebellious energy in the liver channel, we can control your emotional outbursts and thereby improve your breathing. The bronchospasms, caused during such attacks, will also be relieved and the symptoms of headaches, anxiety, frustration and palpitations would all subside once there is effective flow of energy in your liver and lung channels. You will not require any anti-depressants after this treatment.
