With intense rain and winds predicted due to Cyclone Burevi, Kerala's capital district is on high alert. The Deep Depression is likely to move slowly west-southwestwards and cross Ramanathapuram and adjoining Thoothukudi districts during next 06 hours, said a press release by PIB.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places very likely over south Tamil Nadu and at isolated places over Kerala & Mahe during next 24 hours.
As per the latest information, the cyclone is expected to weaken into a depression on Friday.
At least three people were killed after two houses collapsed in Thanjavur on Friday as incessant rains continued.
In a relief to Kerala, the Met department has withdrawn the red alert issued for cyclone Burevi and rains in the seven southernmost districts of the state.
It is expected to pass through Thiruvananthapuram bringing heavy rains and winds in its wake.
Eight teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in central and southern Kerala to deal with any emergency situation arising because of Cyclone Burevi. The teams are present in Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kottayam and Ernakulam.
Tamil Nadu on Friday reported 1,391 new COVID-19 cases, 1,426 discharges, and 15 deaths.

Cuddalore district has been receiving incessant and heavy rainfalls for the last three days due to the impact of cyclone Burevi. Two deaths due to separate incidents of wall collapse were reported in which a 55–year-old Periyakattupalayam woman and a 10-year-old girl in Panruti died on Friday.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the deep depression remained practically stationary during the past six hours and lay centred over the Gulf of Mannar close to the Ramanathapuram district coast, about 40 km southwest of Ramanathapuram, 70 km west-southwest of Pamban and 160 km northeast of Kanniyakumari on Friday. THANJAVUR: At least three people were killed after two houses collapsed in Thanjavur on Friday as incessant rains continued due to cyclone Burevi.
R Kuppuswamy (70) and his wife Yasodha (65) who lived Sivajothi Nagar, Elumichamkai Palayam died after their house collapsed.
In another incident, a house in Vadakaal village near Thanjavur collapsed, claiming the life of one, Sarathambal (83). (READ MORE)
As against the expected rainfall, the southern districts witnessed very low rainfall as on Friday morning.
Thoothukudi district had recorded light to moderate rainfall of 11.42 mm rainfall on an average registering maximum rainfall of 33 mm, 31 mm, 30 mm and 29.6 mm respectively at Vaipar, Surangudi, Kayalpattinam and Thoothukudi town. According to a senior IMD scientist, Burevi may still be potent enough to destroy thatched huts and cause minor damage to power and communication lines. Further, sea water may inundate many lowlying areas and agricultural lands are likely to suffer some damage. THOOTHUKUDI/TIRUNELVELI: Collector Dr Senthil Raj urged the public not to come out of the houses after 6 pm on Thursday. Public in distress were told to call on three dedicated helpline numbers — 0461-1077 (toll fee), 0461-2340101 and 9486454714 (WhatsApp) to contact the emergency operation centre functioning at Thoothukudi collectorate.
Meanwhile, in Tenkasi, no untoward incident was reported. The inflow to the three waterfalls in Courtallam was normal, according to a report issued by the Disaster Management Department. In Nagercoil, 75 temporary relief camps were kept ready. (ENS)
MADURAI: The district administration stopped vehicle movement to Kodaikanal via Palani, Adukkam road, and Batlagundu. Sub Collector Guru Prasad gave the order after 7pm on Thursday.
Expecting heavy rains due to cyclone, precautionary measures were taken to avoid heavy loss, sources said. Meanwhile, the district recorded an average rainfall of 13.27 mm till Wednesday.
Kallandri recorded the highest of 26.20 mm rainfall in the district, followed by Thaniamangalam at 26 mm and Sholavandhan at 24 mm. Sources said that there has been no property or life loss in the district due to the rainfall. (ENS)
According to IMD, these 17 districts are expected to receive heavy to very rainfall for six hours.
Chennai, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Pudukottai, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Kadalur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpet, Thiruvannamalai and Villupuram.
Heavy rains damaged 17 houses at Kariapatti, Tiruchuli, Srivilliputhur, and Virudhunagar on Thursday evening. Responding quickly, the officials shifted all the residents to the nearest relief centres.
District Monitoring Officer S Madhumathi said, “Nine low-lying areas were identified and 15 centres were set up to relocate people from flood-prone zones. This apart, 10 teams of officials are monitoring the situation, and 10 disaster relief teams are on alert.
As many as 911 people — 56 fire and rescue services personnel, 545 swimmers, 209 people — would remain available to remove fallen trees and debris (if any).” (ENS)
Though cyclone Burevi will lose its steam when it enters Kerala, the state government is not ready to take the weather system for granted. It has made all arrangements to avoid damage to property and casuality.

Following heavy rains since Wednesday night, the Public Works Department started releasing 3,000 cusecs of water from the Poondi reservoir and 1,000 cusecs from the Chembarambakkam reservoir from 12 pm on Thursday. The Kerala health department has issued an alert in view of Cyclone Burevi to ensure the successful handling of health issues that might arise due to the storm and rain and possible infectious diseases post-disaster. Health minister KK Shailaja directed the Director of Health Services and Director of Medical Education to ensure adequate medical infrastructure and medicines at all hospitals in the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast that the cyclone is expected to make landfall between Pamban and Kanyakumari during December 3 night or early on December 4 morning.
Red alerts are issued when extremely heavy rainfall of above 20.4 cm is expected. Heavy rainfall alerts are issued when it's expected to clock 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm, and very heavy rainfall if it's between 115.6 mm and 20.44 mm.
Cyclonic Storm Burevi lay centered at 1130 am over Gulf of Mannar about 40 km west-northwest of Mannar, 40km east-southeast of Pamban (India) and 260 km east-northeast of Kanniyakumari. It will then cross south TN coast between Pamban and Kanniyakumari during 3rd night or 4th early morning as a Cyclonic Storm.
Since Wednesday, Pamban region has been witnessing very rough sea with high tides and gale, forcing the residents to stay indoors. As a precautionary measure, the power supply has been disconnected for more than 10 hours around the Pamban region.

Madurai district received an average of 13.27 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. Kallandri received the maximum rainfall of 26.20mm, followed by 26 mm in Thirumangalam, 24 mm in Sholavandhan and 20mm in Melur. Other areas like Madurai north, Tallakulam, Usilampatti, Chittampatti recorded below 20 mm rainfall.
According to the sources, the district received a total of 180.8 mm rainfall in last 24 hrs (till 6 am of Dec 3). Sivaganga received 35.2 mm, Ilayangudi 34.5 mm, Thirupuvanam 29.4 mm, Manamadurai 23 mm, Devakottai 21.2 mm, Karaikudi 20.2 mm and Thiruppathur 17.3 mm during the same period. So far no known damages have been reported but officials are checking for updates.
Kanyakumari district received a total of 17.80 millimeters (mm) rainfall for the last 24 hours till Thursday morning. Meanwhile, water discharge from major dams has been stopped. The average rainfall in the district was 1.11 mm.

According to Indian Meteorological Department, the Cyclonic Storm ‘Burevi’ over north Sri Lanka moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 11 kmph during past six hours and lay centered over north Sri Lanka and adjoining Gulf of Mannar near about 30 km east-northeast of Mannar, 110 km east-southeast of Pamban and 310 km east-northeast of Kanniyakumari on Thursday. It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and emerge into Gulf of Mannar during next 3 hours.
