With another big single-day jump in coronavirus cases, India's Covid-19 tally crossed the seven lakh-mark on Tuesday, July 7, 2020.
According to the update released by the Union Health ministry, 22,252 new cases in the last 24 hours has taken the count to 7,19,665 in India. This includes 2,59,557 active cases and 4,39,948 recovered and migrated cases.
This apart, 467 more people succumbed to the virus taking the death toll to 20160
It must be noted here that India went past Russia on Sunday to become the third worst-hit nation by the COVID-19 pandemic. Only the US and Brazil are ahead of India in terms of total coronavirus infections
Assam reported two COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday, taking the toll to 16, while 814 new positive cases pushed the state's tally to 13,336, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Among the latest casualties is a woman, hailing from Kamrup district, who was admitted to 151 Base Hospital at Basistha here on July 2.

The Delhi government has decided to obtain feedback from patients and their willingness to donate blood plasma at the time of discharge from designated COVID hospitals. The medical superintendents of all government and private COVID hospitals have been issued directions in this regard.
The Delhi government on Tuesday directed state-run and private hospitals in the national capital to put up flex boards to encourage people who have recovered from COVID-19 to donate plasma to help other patients. The boards have to be put up at the gate of all hospitals, the city government said in an order.
Further relaxing the lockdown restrictions, the Maharashtra government on Tuesday decided to allow markets and shops to remain open for additional two hours from July 9. Markets and shops can now remain open from 9 am to 7 pm, an extension of two hours from the existing closing deadline of 5 pm, in non-containment zones.
Rajasthan government on Tuesday barred the private schools in the state from taking advance fees till they reopen, a statement said. The state government had on April 9 barred schools in the state from taking advance fee for three months in view of the corona pandemic and the order was extended today, it said.

A day after monuments across the country reopened their doors for visitors following a gap of more than three months amid coronavirus-induced lockdown, only a handful of people visited these sites. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) which opened its monuments and museums on July 6 has capped visitor entry at every site from 1,000-2,500 per slot --9 am to 12 pm and 12 pm to 6 pm, officials said. District in-charge minister J C Madhuswamy here on Monday expressed shock as the situation to check the spread of COVID-19 virus has been going out of the control with the onset of the community spread. "We are worried not just about the spike in cases but to at the community spread. We struggled but could not help it and reached a situation wherein the check of the spread was going out of control. Efforts and co-operation from the public's side can only help it", he stated while briefing the press.
More than 15 lakh people have been quarantined in Mumbai after contact-tracing so far since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the city civic body said. Out of these, 5.34 lakh people were identified as high-risk contacts, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. So far, 13.28 lakh people have completed their 14-day quarantine.

This decision was taken after a meeting with the private medical colleges conducted on Monday evening in respect of securing beds in their institutions for COVID patients, where all the medical colleges have fallen in line to establish COVID care centers in their institutions. Rajasthan reported four COVID-19 deaths and 234 fresh cases of the virus on Tuesday, taking the total number of infections to 20,922 in the state, according to an official report. One death each was reported from Nagaur, Dholpur Bharatpur and Jodhpur, taking the death toll to 465, it said, adding the total number of positive cases in the state has increased to 20,922, reported PTI.

IT services major Infosys has brought back over 200 of its employees and their families, who were stranded in the US amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown, according to a senior company executive. The company brought these people back from San Francisco via a special chartered flight that landed in Bengaluru on Monday morning.

Total shutdown would be imposed in English Bazar and Old Malda towns for a week, starting Wednesday in the wake of the rising cases of COVID- 19, officials said. All shops will remain shut during this period, except those selling essential items, they said. Pharmacies have also been excluded from the purview of the shutdown, officials said.
Authorities in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar and Shamli on Monday sealed the borders of the districts with neighbouring states of Uttarakhand and Haryana, respectively, in view of the cancellation of the annual Kanwar Yatra due to the coronavirus pandemic, officials said. Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage of devotees of Lord Shiva known as kanwariyas. The devotees visit Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar to fetch holy waters of river Ganga during the auspicious Hindu month of Shravan.

The United States said Monday it would not allow foreign students to remain in the country if all of their classes are moved online in the fall because of the coronavirus crisis. The number of coronavirus cases rose to 6,940 on Monday in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra after 210 more tested positive, while eight patients succumbed to the infection, an official said. The Pune district administration on Monday warned of imposition of stricter restrictions if people continue to flout social distancing norms amid rising COVID-19 cases. Pune district has reported 29,844 COVID-19 cases and 890 deaths so far. "People are seen stepping out of their houses without wearing masks and are violating social distancing norms. If this continues, the district administration will have to take some stringent steps which include imposing stricter restrictions," said district collector Naval Kishore Ram.
Eighteen police personnel from nearby Tirur have been asked to go on quarantine after two accused, arrested in two separate cases, tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday. Police said the duo were arrested by a group of police officials, including a Sub-Inspector, and were directed to go on quarantine. The two accused have been admitted to the COVID-19 speciality hospital at Manjeri, they said.
A plasma bank for treating COVID-19 patients has been set up at Kolkata Medical College and Hospital (KMCH), the first of its kind in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday. So far, around 12 people who have recovered from COVID-19 have donated their plasma in the state to help in the treatment of coronavirus infected people.

The death toll due to COVID-19 in West Bengal mounted to 779 on Monday with highest one-day spike of 22 fatalities, the health department said. As many as 861 people have tested positive for the virus in the past 24 hours, taking the infection tally in the state to 22,987, the department said in its bulletin.
A record 125 people were discharged after recovery from COVID-19 in Goa on Monday, beating the 111-mark set a day earlier, while 52 new cases took the state's count to 1,813, an official said. The number of active cases is 745 as 1,061 people have been discharged and seven have succumbed to the infection, he added.

The Centre on Monday said the average number of samples being tested per day for COVID-19 has gone up in Delhi from 5,481 to 18,766 in about a month and in spite of increased testing, the positivity rate has declined from around 30 per cent to 10 per cent in the last three weeks. The government also said that the national positivity rate, percentage of samples testing coronavirus positive from the total number of samples, has also reduced and now stands at 6.73 per cent.
Police clarified that there has been some "confusion" with regards to the press release on the lockdown arrangements in Thiruvananthapuram, where facility was provided to the members of the public requiring emergency items, to contact the police helpline and the police would supply those essential items to the households.

A 34-year-old journalist working with Hindi daily 'Dainik Bhaskar' died by suicide after he jumped off the fourth floor of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi where he was admitted after testing positive for Covid-19.
