With another big single-day jump in coronavirus cases, India's Covid-19 tally crossed the seven lakh-mark on Tuesday, July 7, 2020.

According to the update released by the Union Health ministry, 22,252 new cases in the last 24 hours has taken the count to 7,19,665 in India. This includes 2,59,557 active cases and 4,39,948 recovered and migrated cases.

This apart, 467 more people succumbed to the virus taking the death toll to 20160

It must be noted here that India went past Russia on Sunday to become the third worst-hit nation by the COVID-19 pandemic. Only the US and Brazil are ahead of India in terms of total coronavirus infections

Assam reports 2 COVID-19 deaths, toll 16; total cases rise to 13,336

Assam reported two COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday, taking the toll to 16, while 814 new positive cases pushed the state's tally to 13,336, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Among the latest casualties is a woman, hailing from Kamrup district, who was admitted to 151 Base Hospital at Basistha here on July 2.

Centre asks states, UTs to bolster mechanism to address mental health issues

Maharashtra government extends closure time of shops by two hours

Further relaxing the lockdown restrictions, the Maharashtra government on Tuesday decided to allow markets and shops to remain open for additional two hours from July 9. Markets and shops can now remain open from 9 am to 7 pm, an extension of two hours from the existing closing deadline of 5 pm, in non-containment zones.

Rajasthan government directs private schools not to charge fees till reopening

Rajasthan government on Tuesday barred the private schools in the state from taking advance fees till they reopen, a statement said. The state government had on April 9 barred schools in the state from taking advance fee for three months in view of the corona pandemic and the order was extended today, it said.

Telangana HC directs state govt to file report on excessive charges by private hospitals

The Telangana High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to file a report on a petition alleging that private hospitals were charging excessively from COVID-19 patients beyond the limit prescribed by the government. The PIL was filed by advocate Srikishan Sharma seeking a direction to the stategovernment to take action against the private hospitals for charging exorbitantly and issue guidelines for maintaining transparency in the matter of treatment and billing against all the patients.

Only one new coronavirus case found in Mumbai's Dharavi area

Dharavi, known as Asia's largest slum, reported only one new coronavirus patient on Tuesday which took the case tally in the densely populated area in the heart of Mumbai to 2,335, an official stated.The last time Dharavi had recorded a single new coronavirus case was on April 5, three months ago. Footfalls barely touch 100 at most monuments that were reopened post lockdown

A day after monuments across the country reopened their doors for visitors following a gap of more than three months amid coronavirus-induced lockdown, only a handful of people visited these sites. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) which opened its monuments and museums on July 6 has capped visitor entry at every site from 1,000-2,500 per slot --9 am to 12 pm and 12 pm to 6 pm, officials said. Tickets to visit these places can be booked online.

Over 15 lakh quarantined in Mumbai since outbreak: BMC 

More than 15 lakh people have been quarantined in Mumbai after contact-tracing so far since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the city civic body said. Out of these, 5.34 lakh people were identified as high-risk contacts, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. So far, 13.28 lakh people have completed their 14-day quarantine.

UP's Muzaffarnagar, Shamli districts seal borders to prevent entry of kanwariyas 

Authorities in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar and Shamli on Monday sealed the borders of the districts with neighbouring states of Uttarakhand and Haryana, respectively, in view of the cancellation of the annual Kanwar Yatra due to the coronavirus pandemic, officials said. Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage of devotees of Lord Shiva known as kanwariyas. The devotees visit Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar to fetch holy waters of river Ganga during the auspicious Hindu month of Shravan. 

'Unlock 1.0' sees 60 per cent of all COVID-19 deaths in India

From March 13, when the first novel coronavirus-related fatality was registered in the country, to May-end, around 5,500 deaths due to the pandemic were recorded. But in June, when unlock started, there was a surge. On June 1, the total deaths stood at 5,606, but by the end of the month, 11,803 more persons had died of Covid-19, taking the fatalities to 17,409.

Foreign students in US will be asked to leave country if classes have gone online due to COVID-19

The United States said Monday it would not allow foreign students to remain in the country if all of their classes are moved online in the fall because of the coronavirus crisis. "Nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools operating entirely online may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States," US Immigration and Custom Enforcement said in a statement.

The largest number of international students came from China, followed by India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Canada.

Kerala: 18 policemen go on quarantine after two accused test positive for COVID-19 near Tirur

Eighteen police personnel from nearby Tirur have been asked to go on quarantine after two accused, arrested in two separate cases, tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday. Police said the duo were arrested by a group of police officials, including a Sub-Inspector, and were directed to go on quarantine. The two accused have been admitted to the COVID-19 speciality hospital at Manjeri, they said.

West Bengal gets its first plasma bank for COVID-19 patients

A plasma bank for treating COVID-19 patients has been set up at Kolkata Medical College and Hospital (KMCH), the first of its kind in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday. So far, around 12 people who have recovered from COVID-19 have donated their plasma in the state to help in the treatment of coronavirus infected people.

Karnataka government is considering providing risk allowance to frontline healthcare workers fighting against COVID-19, state Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar said on Monday. A 34-year-old journalist working with Hindi daily 'Dainik Bhaskar' died by suicide after he jumped off the fourth floor of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi where he was admitted after testing positive for Covid-19. He was admitted to ICU. The senior reporter is survived by his wife and two daughters.

A medical doctor, H D Ranganath from Kunigal constituency in Tumakuru district has been admitted to a private hospital in the city, they said. State Congress Working President Eshwar Khandre in a tweet said he spoke to the MLA over phone and that "the confidence in his voice has given me belief that he will be back victorious in the fight against COVID".
