COVID-19 HIGHLIGHTS | 47,253 cases: Karnataka overtakes Gujarat as fourth worst coronavirus-hit state

Over 3,000 people tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24-hours and the state also recorded 87 deaths related to COVID-19 taking the toll in the state to 928.

India registered a record single-day jump of 29,429 COVID-19 cases pushing its tally to 9,36,181 on Wednesday, while the death toll climbed to 24,309 with 582 new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

For the first time, Karnataka witnessed a record hike in COVID-19 with over 3,000 people testing positive in the last 24 hours. With this, the state tally reached 47,253, making it the state with fourth highest caseload in the country.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of at least 99 doctors in the country so far, a majority of whom were general practitioners, the first documentation of the infection's impact on the country's medical professionals by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has revealed.

    COVID-19 situation in Delhi better now: Kejriwal

  • Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said the COVID-19 situation in the national capital is better than in June, but the war against the disease has not been won yet.
  • Addressing an online media briefing, he said, "The COVID-19 situation in Delhi is under control but we do not have to be complacent. We will continue our preparations."
  • He said his government's first principle of combating the disease is that the COVID-19 fight cannot be won alone, that is why, the AAP dispensation sought cooperation from everyone, be it the Centre, hotels and other organisations.
  • He also said that the coronavirus situation in Delhi is better as compared to June.

  • There are 2 Indian indigenous candidate vaccines. They have undergone successful toxicity studies in rats, mice and rabbits. Data was submitted to DCGI following which both these got clearance to start early phase human trials early this month.
  • These candidate have got their sites ready and they are doing their clinical study on approximately a 1000 human volunteers each at different sites.
  • Russia has fastracked a vaccine which has been successful in its early phases. They have fastrakced its development. China has fastracked its vaccine programme and has also fastracked its studies with that vaccine in China
  • The US, as your read today, has fastracked two of its vaccine candidates. The UK is also lookin g at how it can fastrack the Oxford vaccine candidate, how it can fastrack it for human use
  • COVID-19 is a droplet infection. There has been hypothesis & suggestions by several scientists that there may be some airborne transmission with microdroplets (less than 5 microns in size). What remains important is physical distancing & use of masks.

    There will be a total lockdown in Bihar from July 16-31 to contain the spread of COVID-19, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Tuesday announced.     The Puducherry government is planning to enhance the testing for coronavirus to 3,000 samples per lakh population amid rising cases, Minister of Health Malladi Krishna Rao said. At present, 2,149 samples per lakh population is being tested in Puducherry, 1,828 in Karaikal, 2,354 in Yanam, 2,560 in Mahe as compared to national average of 1505/lakh population.

  • Delhi got its second plasma bank on Tuesday, with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal inaugurating the facility at the state-run Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital here for treatment of COVID-19 patients.
  • The chief minister had inaugurated the first such facility at the state-run Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences on July 2.
  • "Plasma therapy is really helpful in saving lives. We cannot say it is 100 percent successful. But the death rate has reduced in Delhi and plasma has a role in it," the chief minister said at the launch.
  • The LNJP Hospital is located in central Delhi, so it is easily accessible to those willing to donate plasma, he said. COVID-19 patients can donate their plasma 14 days after recovery.
  • Such people should be aged between 18 and 60 and weigh not less than 50 kg.
  • Women who have been pregnant at some time in their life, people with diabetes, hypertension, cancer survivors, those with chronic heart, liver, lung and kidney diseases and high blood pressure cannot donate plasma.
