COVID-19 HIGHLIGHTS | Coronavirus likely to show spike in winter, air pollution may also lead to higher prevalence: Delhi AIIMS Director

India on Thursday recorded 55,838 fresh cases of virus infection and 702 deaths.

Total case tally in the country stands at 77,06,946 including 7,15,812 active cases, 68,74,518 recovered and 1,16,616 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

As the country proceeds towards the winter season, experts said that cooler weather is likely to worsen the coronavirus spread as it happens with most viruses that attack the respiratory tract and may lead to possibly a second, even a bigger wave of cases and deaths in the country.

States' Covid updates

  • Himachal Pradesh reports 223 new #COVID19, 231 cured cases and 5 deaths reported in the past 24 hours. The state's case tally is 19,844 with 16,914 cured cases, 2623 active cases and 279 deaths.
  • Haryana has 1,128 new cases and 1,292 discharges. Total cases at 1,54,495 including 10,009 active cases, 1,42,798 discharges and 1,688 deaths: State Health Department
  • Assam reports 508 new cases and 1584 discharges today. Total cases in the state rise to 2,03,282, including 1,77,659 discharges, 24,724 active cases and 896 deaths.
  • Jharkhand reported 549 new COVID-19 cases, 625 recoveries and 8 deaths today, taking total cases to 98,610 including 91,629 recoveries, 859 deaths and 6,122 active cases.
  • Bharat Biotech gets nod for Phase-III Covaxin trials

    The Subject Expert Committee (SEC) under Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has given the nod to Hyderabad-based firm Bharat Biotech to conduct Phase-III trials of Covaxin, the vaccine for Covid-19.     Devarajan, 63, from Pathanapuram died on October 2. He was hospitalised due to breathing difficulties on September 18. Once he tested positive for COVID-19, his wife Pushpa went back home. Later, she also tested positive for the virus. On October 2, the hospital authorities informed the family about his death.

    Hyderabad startup develops mushroom-based 'immunity booster' against COVID-19

    The mushroom, Cordyceps militaris, is known for its immune boosting and anti-oxidant components. The novel nutraceutical developed by the startup Clone Deals has been named 'CoronAid'. The startup has obtained FSSAI approval for marketing and submitted a request to the central government for conducting clinical trials to establish the safety of their formulation with three All India Institutes of Medical Sciences -- Nagpur, Navi Mumbai and Bhopal. If the clinical trials are successful, the product is expected to be available in the market by December this year.

    Delhi govt directs clubs, liquor shops to ensure strict compliance of SOPs

    Assistant commissioner (enforcement) has been asked to deploy teams to check compliance of SOPs at bars in hotels, clubs and restaurants.

    An official said the department was taking action against those not following COVID-appropriate behaviour such as wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.

    UP records decline in Covid cases, recovery rate 91.91%

    In the last 24 hours, 2,351 new cases were reported in the state, said the Health Department.

    The active Covid cases have come down to 30,416 due to a greater number of persons recovering from the infection as compared to the newly infected cases. Nearly 4.59 lakh persons were affected out of which 4.22 lakh have recovered.

    Over 3,000 people arrested for flouting COVID-19 protocol: Kolkata Police

    The Kolkata Police has arrested over 3,000 people in the last 10 days for flouting COVID-19 protocol and not wearing masks, a senior officer said on Wednesday.

    Police were arresting people from places in and around the market and shopping malls which have been witnessing people gathering in large numbers for Durga Puja shopping.

    Tripura reports 112 new COVID-19 cases, 265 people recover

    At least 112 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Tripura on Wednesday, pushing the tally to 29,800, a health department official said.

    The death toll rose to 329 with one more patient succumbing to the infection, he said. Tripura currently has 2,458 active coronavirus cases, while 26,990 people have recovered from the disease.

    Arunachal reports more recoveries than fresh cases

    The number of COVID-19 recoveries in Arunachal Pradesh surpassed fresh cases on Wednesday, with 255 people recuperating from the disease, even as 135 more people tested positive for the virus, pushing the tally to 13,778, a senior health official said.

  • Schools across the state are set to reopen from November 2.
  • Schools will function for half-day for November, & students will be sent homes after midday meals.
  • Classes will be held on alternative days for the different standards- 1, 3,5,7,9 will have classes one day, whereas 2,4,6,8 will have classes on the next day.
  • Schools having above 750 students will have two working days per class per week, and schools with less than 750 students will have three working days per week
  • Hand sanitation & physical distancing mandatory. Students will be divided into small sections to prevent congestion. These guidelines would be implemented in November.

    Delhi health department tells hospitals to 'watch out' for co-infections

  • The Delhi health department has written to all hospitals and district authorities to be alert about co-infections of COVID-19 with other seasonal ailments and implement management guidelines on it issued by the Union Health Ministry.
  • Cases of dengue, malaria, chikungunya, seasonal influenza and other diseases are expected to rise with the onset of winter.
  • Some of the COVID-19 patients have been diagnosed with dengue too.
  • "The document provides clear guidelines on prevention and treatment of co-infections of COVID-19 with diseases like dengue, malaria, seasonal influenza (H1N1), leptospirosis, chikungunya, scrub typhus, bacterial co-infections etc," reads the letter sent by the department to all Delhi government hospitals and district magistrates on Monday.
