NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday appointed IPS officer Amar Pratap Singh as the new Director of the CBI.
The Appointments’ Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has cleared the name of 58-year-old Singh. Singh, 1974 batch IPS officer from Jharkhand cadre, succeeds Ashwani Kumar whose term come to end on Tuesday. After completing two years of fixed tenure, Kumar was on three months further extension as the government was unable to find a suitable replacement that would tide the agency through difficult period.
The CBI’s credibility has recently slumped to an all time low with opposition parties casting serious aspersions on its independence and ridiculing it for plying to government diktats.
Singh was serving as Special Director of the agency. He has also held the post of additional Director General in the BSF.
