NEW DELHI: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday asserted that her stand opposing the appointment of P J Thomas as CVC was vindicated, in the light of the Supreme Court observations.

The apex court observed that as Secretary in the Department of Telecom (DoT), Thomas had justified certain actions that are now under the CBI scanner and it would be very difficult for him to be objective if he were to supervise the CBI probe into the 2G Spectrum scam.

Asked if CVC should resign in the wake of Supreme Court observations, Sushma Swaraj said, “This question should be put to the Government. How can you have such a CVC and for how long? I have said this in the committee itself. My stand has been vindicated.”

Reacting to the Supreme Court observations, Sushma said she had made it a point to doubly register her dissent. Inspite of the proceedings of the committee recording her dissent, Sushma wrote in her own handwriting, “I disagree,” and signed under it. The Committee comprised of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj.

The proceedings of the committee stated, “After due consideration, the majority of the committee recommended the name of P J Thomas, IAS (KL/73) for Central Vigilance Commissioner’s post, with Sushma Swaraj recording her disagreement.”

Reacting to reports that efforts were on to get Thomas to step down, Rajya Sabha BJP deputy leader S S Ahluwalia said Thomas should be sacked and should not be provided with an “escape route” by allowing him to resign.
