PORT BLAIR: Two strong earthquakes of 8.7 and 8.2 magnitude on the Richter Scale shook the faith of people living in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Wednesday afternoon.

The quakes, with their epicentre at Banda Aceh, Indonesia, triggered panic in the islands. Terrified residents of Nicobar District ran out of their homes and were waiting in the open for hours, out of fear, while people in Port Blair remained glued to the TV for updates on the tsunami threat.

Thousands of people were evacuated from the low-lying areas of South Andaman region and Nicobar District by the administration. Students from the Boy’s and Girls’ Hostel at Port Blair were evacuated and taken to higher ground.
