NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday banned the use of tinted glass that restricts vision beyond the limit as prescribed under the Motor Vehicles Act, in vehicles.

However, a Bench comprising Chief Justice S H Kapadia and Justice Swatanter Kumar made it clear that tinted glass can be used in vehicles of government officials for security reasons, and directed all the State Governments and Union Territories to frame guidelines with regard to this.

As per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, the glasses of the windscreen and the rear windows should have 70 per cent visual light transmission and for side windows it should be at least 50 per cent.

Justice Swatanter Kumar passed the order on a petition filed by Avishek Goenka who sought complete ban on the use of the dark films on car windows, alleging that many crimes occur due to the use of such glasses.
