The BJP on Wednesday slammed the Congress-led UPA Government for the Cabinet reshuffle effected on Tuesday, saying that it was “an exercise in futility”.

The Opposition party charged that “incompetence had been rewarded in the reshuffle on one hand” and “a minister, who was under cloud in the controversial Aircel-Maxis deal, had been provided with an escape route, on the other hand”.

“The Cabinet reshuffle is an exercise in futility. This shows the intentions of the government. There appears to be a serious talent deficit in the government, the government also appears to have made an attempt to save P Chidambaram, who is already under cloud in the controversial Aircel-Maxis deal,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.  He said Chidambaram should not have been given the finance portfolio “as a matter of propriety”. “It was a malafide takeover. And how did Foreign Investment Promotion Board give permission when Chidambaram was the Finance Minister... is this reshuffle a  cover-up exercise?” he asked.

He also took a dig at the government for the promotion of former Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde that too on a day when the country experienced an unprecedented power blackout. “Was this a way of rewarding ministerial incompetence?” he asked.
