Dearth of teachers hits Central Universities

The Central University of Tamil Nadu is yet to fill up the sanctioned teaching posts in Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes categories.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal informed the Lok Sabha that as many as 2,713 teaching posts in Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes categories were lying vacant in 40 central universities.

In a written reply, Sibal said that against the 21 sanctioned SC teaching posts in the Central University of Tamil Nadu, not a single post was filled so far. Similarly, out of 11 sanctioned ST teaching posts, not a single post was filled so far.

Out of 32 sanctioned SCST teaching posts in the Central University of Kerala, 29 posts are lying vacant.

Similarly, out of 32 sanctioned SCST teaching posts in Central University of Karnataka, 24 posts are yet to be filled.

82 SCST teaching posts are lying vacant in the University of Hyderabad.

At the Central University of Odisha, 29 sanctioned SCST teaching posts are lying vacant.

Sibal said the HRD Ministry had written to all the central universities, established prior to 2008, to launch a special drive to fill the backlog vacancies of SCsSTs.

These institutions are being reminded regularly to fill up the vacant posts.

The minister pointed out that in view of the expansion of the 12th Plan period and increase in intake capacity of students, central universities have been sanctioned additional teaching posts.

In order to fill up the teaching posts reserved for SCST candidates, the UGC provides funds for remedial coaching at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels as well as for qualifying the National Eligibility Test for entry into teaching position in higher educational institutions, Sibal added.
