Myanmar sanctuary for northeast ultras

The insurgent groups from the Northeastern states have established a safe sanctuary on the Naga Hills of neighbouring Myanmar to wage a war against India, the Lok Sabha was told on Tuesday.

This was despite Yangon’s repeated assurances that it would not allow its territory to be used for anti-India activities, according to a written reply by Union Minister of State of Home Affairs, Mullappally Ramachandran.

After Dhaka had cracked down on Indian insurgent groups operating out of Bangladesh, most of the outfits had fled Chittagong and Mymensingh and set up their hideouts in the rugged terrain of Western Myanmar which shares its border with the four Northeastern states-- Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. The base in Myanmar also provides the groups with strategic links to China, which has backed several of these insurgent groups.
