Cash transfer irks EC

Questions its timing, seeks Cabinet Secy’s reply today

Questioning the timing of the announcement of direct cash transfer scheme, the Election Commission (EC) on Sunday sought a detailed report on the issue from Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth by Monday evening.

The poll panel has already conveyed its unhappiness over the timing of the announcement saying the government could have avoided such a move, considering that the Model Code of Conduct was in force for the Gujarat elections scheduled later this month.

Seeking a factual report, the strongly worded second reminder said the EC would proceed with appropriate action, if the govt failed to present the report in time.

Senior BJP leaders, led by L K Advani, had met Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath to complain about the announcement.

Advani had said that the government should not make such announcements once election dates were declared.

The government should not have done it under the election code, he added.

However, the government maintained that it was fulfilling an election promise made by the Congress in 2009.
