Even as tension prevailed in Cauvery basin districts, Karnataka is learnt to have started releasing water to Tamil Nadu from Wednesday night, sources said, adding that 10,000 cusecs was released at 11 pm on Thursday also from the Krishnaraja Sagar dam.

Though CM Jagadish Shettar did not state in the Assembly that water was being released, he said that not complying with the Supreme Court order to release 10,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu till Sunday would go against the state’s interests.

Shettar and a team of MPs from the Cauvery basin region will meet PM Manmohan Singh and Water Resources Minister Harish Rawat on Friday, prior to the CMC meet.
