The suicide of Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who was found dead in London’s King Edward VII hospital on Friday, has come as a shock to her in-laws in Shirva of Udupi taluk in Karnataka.
Before being found lying unconscious, the 46-year-old was duped by a prank call from Australian radio jockeys enquiring after pregnant Kate Middleton, the UK royal admitted to the hospital. The family is in a state of utter disbelief. “We came to know about the hoax phone call creating troubles to my daughter-in-law only after her suicide,” her mother-in-law Carmine Saldanha said.
A native of Valencia, Jacintha was married to Benedict Barboza from Shirva in 1993. “Though he(Benedict)did not call me on that hoax call day, everything seemed normal,” she said.
