SC order a jolt to Yadav family

The Supreme Court order allowing the CBI to go ahead with its probe in a disproportionate assets (DA)case was a virtual jolt to the SP first family in general and UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in particular.

On the personal front, the SC decision is a major setback to Akhilesh, who has had a squeaky clean and non-controversial image since becoming the youngest ever Chief Minister of the politically crucial state.

And it is to Akhilesh’s credit that no one has levelled any corruption charges against him during the SP Government’s eight month-old rule. This was despite the fact that UP Chief Ministers had in the past been accused of  pampering the “transfer-posting industry”.

However, in the changed circumstances, he will have to face a CBI probe as the Chief Minister!

In March 2007, when the Supreme Court had ordered the CBI to carry out a probe against the Yadav family, Akhilesh was just an MP. And it was following a PIL from Vishwanath  Chaturvedi, an advocate and  Congress activist, that the SC ordered the probe.

Chaturvedi had alleged in his petition that the Yadav family had amassed wealth beyond its known sources of income and had submitted evidence and documentary proof to substantiate  his charges.

Although the CBI is said to have found clinching evidence against the Yadavs for amassing massive wealth, the hot and cold ties between the SP and the Congress had prevented the probe agency from taking the probe to its logical conclusion. At one stage, the CBI was not even inclined to pursue the probe, but the SC order gave it few if any options.

But Thursday’s development would further land the Yadav family in trouble despite the fact  that Mulayam has welcomed the court verdict by saying justice has been done.

Now, at a time when the SP and Congress are coming closer to each other than at any point in the past, it would be interesting to see how the the CBI would carryout its investigation.
