Normal life hit in Manipur by strike, curfew clamped

Normal life was hit in Manipur onthe final day today of the general strike called to protestagainst the alleged molestation of a Manipuri film actress bya Naga militant, as curfew was imposed in all four valleydistricts.

All markets and business houses remained closed whiletransport services between Manipur and neighbouring states andwithin the state were cancelled, official reports said.

Attendance in government offices was almost nil whilebanks, educational institutions and other work places remainedclosed in response to the strike called by various socialorganisations, including Film Forum Manipur, and some otherartistes' associations.

The strike, which resumed at midnight last night afterremaining suspended for two days owing to Christmas, will becalled off this evening, the organisers said.

However, to protest against the December 18 incidentof molestation of Manipuri film actress Momoko and two otherartistes, other forms of democratic agitations, includingsit-ins, would be held, they said.

Official sources said that the curfew would be lifted at6 PM when the strike ends.
