NEWDELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu Government on a petition filed by Sohan Roy, producer of the movie Dam 999, seeking lifting of ban on the film in the state. The apex court directed the Tamil Nadu Government to file its reply within 10 days.

It was in December that the Tamil Nadu Government had banned the film in the state saying that the film indirectly portrays the Mullaiperiyar dam dispute and may create panic among the people of the state. To this, Sohan Roy remarked that the ban is a ‘challenge’ to the creativity of the people. “The film Dam 999 does not refer to the present Mullaperiyar dispute between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The movie is only about dam disaster,” Roy added. During the earlier hearing, the apex court had asked the Tamil Nadu Government to hear the objections of Roy on  December 12 and pass appropriate orders by December 16.

The Tamil Nadu Government then decided to extend the ban by six months. To this, the director said that he has no option but to move the Supreme Court once again.
