NEW DELHI: A Pakistani judicial commission probing the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks will visit India in February to record the statements of witnesses and investigators of the 2008 mayhem, a source said Friday.
The final dates of the visit are yet to be decided, but tentatively the Pakistani panel will be in India next month, the official source said.
The development comes after the Bombay High Court gave its nod to the Pakistani judicial commission to record the statements of Mumbai terror attack witnesses.
According to sources, the court has given an in-principle approval for the visit and has informed the union home ministry about it.
The ministry, the sources said, would soon convey this to Pakistan and the two countries would then finalise the dates for the commission's visit.
Pakistan has expressed desire to record statement of the magistrate, R.V. Sawant Waghule, who had recorded the confession of Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive during the Mumbai attack.
This, according to Islamabad, will help in prosecuting the suspected masterminds of the 2008 terror strike in which 166 people were killed when 10 Pakistani terrorists sneaked into Mumbai and unleashed murder and mayhem with bombs, grenades and guns at multiple targets.
Investigating Officer Ramesh Mahale and the doctor who carried out the autopsy of the killed terrorists are also to testify before the Pakistani judicial team.
India expressed its willingness to let the Pakistani commission take the statements when the home secretaries of the two countries met here in March 2011.
Pakistan has arrested seven suspected terrorists of the Lashkar-e-Taiba terror outfit, including its founder Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, who face charges of planning, financing and facilitating the Mumbai attack.
Pakistan has issued a gazette notification on the formation of the commission and has listed the members who will represent the government. The delegation includes Khalid Qureshi, from the Federal Investigation Agency, and two main prosecutors Mohammed Azhar Chaudhry and Chaudhry Zulifqar.
