NEW DELHI: Nearly 500 dwellings were gutted Tuesday morning in a fire broke that out in a densely populated slum at Ghazipur in east Delhi. However, no loss of life has been reported, fire officials said.

The cause of fire is still unknown.

"Nearly 500 dwellings and some piles of plastic were burnt," a fire official told IANS."No casualty has been reported till now," he said.

The officials said they got a call around 3 a.m. Tuesday, and the fire was controlled by 5 a.m.

"A total of 20 fire tenders were rushed immediately," he said.

"Piles of plastic fed the fire," he said.

A fire in the same slum in 2010, caused by after a high voltage electricity line, had gutted 100 dwellings.

According to reports from Delhi government, nearly half of Delhi's 15 million population lives in slums, JJ clusters and unauthorised colonies.
