Delhi slum-dwellers get 500 apartments

With the state Assembly polls due next year, the Delhi Government has chose to spend more for the people by increasing the social sector expenditure to 65 percent (from 59 percent) of the annual budget.

In a recent move, the city government has allotted 500 flats to slum-dwellers here. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit distributed the allotment letters to 40 beneficiaries, while the rest 460 were handed over the letters at a function held at Delhi Secretariat.

The slum-dwellers belonging to SC category got the flats free-of-cost from the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) as the state government released the amount equivalent to slum-dwellers’ contribution as subsidy.

The flats have been disbursed by the state government as part of a scheme of rehabilitation of slum-dwellers. The housing complex for slum-dwellers is situated in Bawana, a suburb of Delhi and would be connected by metro rail service in the third phase of Metro Rail.
