Counting of Presidential poll votes today

UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee is virtually all set to become the country’s 14th President on Sunday when the counting and declaration of results of the July 19 poll will take place.

Mukherjee’s victory has been ensured after the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC announced its support for him.

Besides the UPA allies, parties like the SP and BSP as well as the Left are supporting the former Finance Minister.

The ruling Congress-led UPA has claimed that Pranab will win around 70 per cent of the votes.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Presidential election is set to witness a direct fight between UPA nominee Hamid Ansari and his NDA counterpart Jaswant Singh. The candidature of only these two nominees was accepted after the scrutiny of the nomination papers filed for the election.

The nomination papers of 29 others were rejected for failing to meet the requirements. A total of 790 MPs are eligible to cast their vote on August 7 to elect the Vice-President.
