KOLKATA: The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Government in West Bengal has decided to release 40 political prisoners.

“We have decided to release 40 political prisoners who have served more than 18 years in prison...We wish them well and hope they can return to normal life,” Mamata told reporters on Tuesday. Of the 52 prisoners in the list drawn up by the state, two were not cleared for release by the Centre.  The release of political prisoners was one major plank of the TMC campaign during last year’s Assembly polls.
