Prime Minister’s Special envoy Ashwani Kumar met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Wednesday to convey an invitation to visit India for the annual summit as well as lay the ground for the first-ever India trip by Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

Kumar was appointed by the PM last month as a special envoy with rank of Cabinet minister, for a visit not exceeding seven days, three months after he resigned as the Law Minister after being accused of vetting the draft of CBI probe on Coalgate.

Kumar reached Tokyo on Tuesday for a three-day visit, which included meetings at the Imperial palace and calling on senior ministers.

On Wednesday, while meeting PM Abe, Kumar said Indians were looking forward to the visit of the Imperial couple and the Indian Government was making “all possible arrangements in ensuring a memorable and productive visit by their Majesties”.
