Central government probing Mamata, minister's heckling

The central government is probing the alleged heckling of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Finance Minister Amit Mitra by student activists in New Delhi, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said here Wednesday.

"I have instituted an inquiry into the incident. Special secretary, union home department, is probing the matter," Shinde told media persons here.

Banerjee and Amit Mitra were heckled April 9 by activists of the Students Federation of India, the students' wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), when she went to the Planning Commission office in New Delhi for a meeting.

Following the incident, Banerjee made a hasty return to Kolkata, cancelling her meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and said "Delhi is not safe".

She later complained of sickness and had to be hospitalised.

The incident made the opposition, the BJP, accuse the Congress-led UPA government at the centre of "failing to provide security to Banerjee and her minister".
