Polling underway for Moga by-election

Polling is today underway for by-election toMoga Assembly constituency in Punjab which was necessitated due to Congress MLAJoginder Pal Jain resigning from the party and joining the ruling SAD-BJPalliance.

Around 10 per cent of the electorate had cast their votes inthe first one hour.

The main contest is between Akali Dal candidate Joginder PalJain and Congress candidate Vijay Kumar Sathi.

Jain had quit the assembly seat and the Congress party onDecember 26, last year and joined the Akali Dal. He was elected from Moga seaton a Congress ticket in the 2012 assembly polls. His resignation forced aby-election. A total of 10 candidates are in the fray.

A total of 1,79,338 voters are expected to exercise theirfranchise.While 69 booths are hyper sensitive, 90 are sensitive out of thetotal 188.

A large number of paramilitary forces and Punjab Policepersonnel have been deployed to ensure free and fair polling.

The security personnel had yesterday held flag marches inMoga town and in the rural areas to instill confidence among the electorates.

During the campaigning, leaders of both the parties launcheda no holds barred attack on each other. Although the Congress has lost therecently concluded Assembly polls in Punjab, the party has put all its effortsto defend the seat, which was vacated after one of its leader resigned.
