Centre not to reduce juvenile age

The Centre on Wednesday made it clear that it has no plans to reduce the age of juveniles under the Juvenile Justice Act.   Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath informed the Rajya Sabha that the government was not ready to reduce the juvenile age.

Tirath said a suggestion was made regarding lowering the juvenile age from 18 years to 16 years, at a  recent meeting held by the Ministry of Home Affairs with the chief secretaries and director generals of police. “The Justice J S Verma committee has not supported the suggestion regarding reducing juvenile age,” she said.
