The CBI has termed the encounter of Ishrat Jehan and three others in 2004 as ‘fake’.
The CBI has so far not named any IB officer as accused in the case. However, the agency is continuing with its investigation regarding the ‘conspiracy’ angle and would file a ‘supplementary’ chargesheet in the case within a month or two. It is probing the role played by IB special director Rajinder Kumar and IB officers M K Sinha, Rajiv Wankhede and P Mittal.
On June 12, 2004, a meeting was held between Vanzara, Pandey and an IB officer at Vanzara’s office where the encounter was planned.
There was a difference of opinion on whether to kill Ishrat. After the decision was made, they collected weapons. Between June 14 and 15, Javed, Ishrat, and Zeeshan were driven by policemen to a highway between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar in Javed’s blue Indica vehicle, while Amjadali was brought to the place separately, following which they were killed.
