NHRC notice to UP DGP in rape case

Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report, the NHRC has issued notices to the UP DGP and Sant Kabir Nagar SP on alleged gangrape of a woman in a police station.

The NHRC observed that the media report, if true, raised a serious issue of human rights violation.

According to the report, the rape victim had gone to the police outpost at Bakhira on May 26 evening to secure the release of her husband arrested following an non-bailable warrant. But the in-charge of the out-post and three constables allegedly raped her. Later, the victim’s husband lodged a written complaint with the district police. The NHRC has asked the Odisha Human Rights Commission to initiate action in a case, wherein a woman was killed and her brother suffered injuries, when a police van hit them.
