BJP MP Tarun Vijay Tuesday demanded that Hindus in Jammu and Kashmir and in some north eastern states should be recognised as a minority by the union government to make them eligible for scholarships and other benefits.

Vijay, who is also the spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said the Ministry of Minority Affairs was mandated to oversee the socio economic development of notified minority communities in the country.

He said notified minority communities were those which have been notified under Section 2(c) of the National Commission of Minority Act, 1992.

"There is need for a complete review of the government's minority policy," Vijay told IANS.

He said schemes of the Ministry of Minority Affairs for educational and economic empowerment were focussed towards notified minority communities.
