Two police constables were arrested in Ghaziabad for harassing a newly-married couple and extorting Rs.8,000 from them, police said Tuesday.
The incident occurred Monday evening at Shipra Mall near Indirapuram here. The couple came for marketing in the mall.
When they were boarding their car, the police constables, Vipin and Satish, posted at Shipra Sun City police post stopped the husband and wife and threatened to arrest them for being in illicit relationship and extorted Rs.8,000.
Later, the girl's father approached Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nitin Tiwari and lodged a complaint.
"Both the constables... were found guilty of extorting money from the couple. A criminal case was registered against them. They have been arrested and have been produced before the court. A departmental inquiry has also been constituted against them," Tiwari told IANS.
