There exists a legend about hardcore criminals cracking during the interrogation in the custody of the Mumbai police and it did not take long for sleuths of the elite crime branch police to get Gurunath Meiyappan talking. According to police sources, Meiyappan has admitted to have placed bets in a big way in the IPL matches.  What came as a surprise was that he made most of the money when he placed bets on his own team (CSK) but lost money when he wagered on other teams. This admission supports Mumbai police's stand that Meiyappan was no ordinary punter as he had inside information.

According to sources, Meiyappan, being the team principal, got the information about the playing order of the batsmen and about changes being made from the team management. This information along other team strategies, Meiyappan would pass it onto bookies.
