The poll scenario in Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency took an interesting turn on Friday as Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) supremo Subash Ghising extended his support to Trinamool Congress nominee Bhaichung Bhutia saying that the soccer star “is the son of the hills”. The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha, the dominating force in the Darjeeling hills, is supporting BJP candidate Surendra Singh Ahluwalia. In the 2009 general elections, the GJM had supported BJP nominee Jaswant Singh and he was elected with a margin of whopping 2,53,000 votes. While the GJM felt that Ghishing was an “outsider in the hills now”, the CPM said the decision would have no bearings on the elections in the hills. GJM spokesman Binay Tamang said, “The TMC had betrayed us and Ghisingh’s decision has already led to a revolt in the GNLF.”
