The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday released purported audio recordings and transcripts alleging a massive cover-up in the 2G scam to protect members of the DMK first family. AAP leader and SC lawyer Prashant Bhushan charged that sensitive documents related to an alleged `200 crore loan, channelised into Kalaignar TV’s account using a circuitous route, were doctored and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi was fully aware of the developments.
“Backdated documents were prepared by Sharad Kumar to show it was a loan. The whole story of loan and return of loan was a dubious cover-up. Karunanidhi was fully in the know and involved in the cover-up,” Bhushan alleged. Sharad Kumar was the MD of Kalaignar TV. Referring to the CBI probe, Bhushan claimed Kalaignar TV, owned by Karunanidhi’s daughter and RS MP Kanimozhi, his wife Dayalu Ammal and Sharad Kumar, got Rs 200 crore in 2008 when A Raja was the Telecom Minister and the money was paid as kickback for spectrum allocation to Shahid Balwa’s telecom firm Swan Telecom, a wing of his DB Realty. Kalaignar TV had claimed it was loan received from DB Realty through Kusegaon Fruits and Cineyug, and it was later returned with interest after CBI registered a case.
“There are conversations between Kanimozhi, Karunanidhi’s PA and Jaffer Sait, an IPS officer close to the family. There are talks on tape of kickbacks from a power plant going to the accused. The tapes were recorded on a cellphone, we can’t say who leaked it,” Bhushan said adding that the tapes seem genuine but they have not conducted any forensic test. Express can’t verify the authenticity of the taped conversations.
Bhushan charged that in a purported conversation in February 2011, Sharad told Sait he was alerted about the CBI move to arrest Kalaignar TV directors in the 2G scam. He also discussed about alleged manipulation in Kalaignar TV documents and how he signed some 100-page backdated records. Sharad told Sait that records were being changed anticipating queries by probe agencies.
Bhushan claimed that in another purported conversation recorded on February 16, 2011, Sait read out a statement to deny Kalaignar TV’s link in the 2G scam. Before reading it out in Tamil to Kanimozhi, Sait said ‘boss’ was okay with it. “The statement which was purportedly issued by Kalaignar TV was actually prepared by Jaffer Sait and issued on behalf of Kalaignar TV,” Bhushan said.
